Netflix Releases First Preview for Fifth and Final Season ArticlePure

It’s the beginning of the end for Joe Goldberg.

The first trailer for the fifth and final season of Netflix’s You was released on Monday, March 10, and things are only getting messier for the serial killer and his wife as they return to New York City.

“Hello, you, you’re back in the greatest city in the world thanks to the one person who could make it possible,” Penn Badgley’s Joe narrates in the newly released trailer. “Fame definitely took some getting used to, but to live happily ever after, you had to bury your old self.”

Joe had previously been working under the pseudonym Professor Jonathan Moore and attempting to live a clean life abroad. But now, he comes face-to-face with a temptation in the form of new character Bronte (The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Madeline Brewer).

“You have a great life. It’s just not worth the risk,” Joe tells himself.

However, Bronte seems to understand Joe in ways others don’t — and as his notoriety starts making headlines (literally), he seems to find comfort in her, which fans of the show know can only be dangerous.

Meanwhile, Joe’s wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) faces a threat in her twin sisters Raegan and Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp), who declare, “I want our sister to step down as CEO. I’m coming for everything.”

And though Joe seems ready to take down Kate’s sisters, his wife urges him to see reason, saying, “You want us to kill everyone who’s suspicious of us for the rest of our lives?”

“Is that so wrong if it’s for the right reasons?” Joe retorts.

In a tense montage, we see that Joe will be back to his usual, brutal antics, complete with attacks, plenty of blood and no shortage of seduction.

His final message to viewers: “As for you, we’re not done with each other, yet.”

Netflix’s summary for the season reads, “In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after … until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.”

Badgley previously shared with PEOPLE his hopes for what’s to come, back in March 2023.

“I feel like it’s building towards a greater resolution,” he said. “That’s what I want for Joe … because now, the circumstances are actually different.”

Added Badgley of his serial-killer character, “He has a level of power and wealth that he’s never had.”

The fifth and final season of You premieres April 24 on Netflix.
