Inside Out 2 is having a joyful run at the box office.
The Disney-Pixar sequel, about the emotions guiding a teenage girl, continues to be the biggest movie of 2024 so far, crossing the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office in less than three weeks since its June 14 release.
Barbie, which hit theaters in July 2023, is the last film to have reached $1 billion at the global box office.
According to The Walt Disney Company, that makes Inside Out 2 the fastest animated film to ever reach $1 billion. In North America the movie totaled $469.3 million, while internationally it has earned $545.5 million.
Surpassing $1 billion means Inside Out 2 is now one of only 11 animated titles to have ever done so. It also bested the overall gross of its predecessor, 2015’s Inside Out, which earned $859 million worldwide.
The Kelsey Mann–directed film, which features the voices of Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Tony Hale as Fear, Maya Hawke as new emotion Anxiety and more, also set the 2024 record for the biggest box office opening, and is the second-biggest animated box office opening of all time domestically (behind another Disney-Pixar film, 2018’s Incredibles 2).
“We’re absolutely thrilled to have reached this phenomenal milestone in record time, and it once again proves that global audiences will come out for a great movie,” said Tony Chambers, executive vice president of theatrical distribution for The Walt Disney Company, in a statement.
“The film’s remarkable success is a testament not only to the incredible creativity of the Pixar team but an example of moviegoing at its very best.”

Speaking to Time magazine prior to the sequel’s release, Pete Docter — Pixar’s chief creative officer and director of the original Inside Out — expressed high hopes for it amid the overall poor box office performance in the first half of 2024.
“I can’t imagine having a better chance at a big box office than this because it’s a known movie and characters that meant something to people… and hopefully something meaty at the heart of it that you can take home as well,” the filmmaker said in June.
“If this doesn’t do well at the theater, I think it just means we’re going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business.”
Before Inside Out 2, the biggest opening of the year was Dune: Part Two, which has totaled $712 million worldwide.
Inside Out 2 is in theaters now. Next up for Pixar is original story Elio in 2025, followed by sequel Toy Story 5 scheduled for 2026.
