Throughout his acting career, Nathan Lane has earned recognition for his work in TV, films and onstage, but by his own admission, one of his most important roles is being the husband to Devlin Elliott.
Lane and Elliott celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2023, and though their relationship is kept mostly private, but from time to time Lane will publicly praise the man that he has loved for more than two decades.
During an interview with The View, Lane put it bluntly, saying, “We’ve been together 25 years and he’s the greatest person in the world and I couldn’t get through my life without him.”
Like his famous husband, Elliott is also deeply rooted in the world of theater and has been nominated for awards of his own. He has worked as a producer for years, and in 2015, he and Lane even wrote a children’s book about their dog.
So who is Nathan Lane’s husband? Here’s everything to know about Devlin Elliott and his relationship with the fellow actor.
Lane and Elliott tied the knot in November 2015 after an 18-year relationship. At the time, a representative for Lane told PEOPLE, “Nathan and Devlin were married in a small ceremony in New York City this week. Everyone is extremely happy.”
Like his husband, Elliott has a long history of working in theater. According to his biography at Simon & Schuster, he is the co-owner of production company Maberry Theatricals, a West End producer and has been nominated for a Tony Award.
Elliott’s public LinkedIn profile also details his past production work. Before founding Maberry Theatricals, he worked as a producer at White Rabbit Red Rabbit and was a general partner for the productions Afraid of the Dark and Master Class.
Elliott was nominated for best revivial of a musical at the 2010 Tony Awards.
Elliott’s work hasn’t only been limited to the stage: Per TV Guide, he filmed one episode of The X-Files in 2001 and returned to television for an episode of Frasier in 2003, among other appearances.
Elliott and Lane don’t have children together, but they are the proud fur parents of their dog, Mabel. In a 2015 profile, USA Today described the dog as “well-behaved, friendly and loves to give licks.”
Elliott also told the outlet that the dog is important to the couple. As he explained, “She’s become our version of a child … really all she wants is for you to pick her up and hold her like a baby.”
Lane added, “She’s a little neurotic and needy at times. It’s like living with a supermodel. And now that she’s become a celebrity, you know, it’s very difficult.”
While visiting The View on Valentine’s Day, Lane explained that “every day” is romantic for the two.
He said, “In fact, my husband and I just said, ‘Let’s not do anything on Valentine’s Day. It’s about doing it every day,’ that kind of appreciation.”
In 2015, Lane and Elliott wrote the children’s book Naughty Mabel together.
Inspired by their real-life dog, the book’s description explains, “Meet Mabel, the fanciest French bulldog the Hamptons have ever seen. Mabel is many things: sassy, classy (and sometimes a bit gassy!), but especially … naughty! Mabel’s always getting herself into trouble — and with style like hers, can you really blame her? When Naughty Mabel’s parents throw a party and try to leave her out of the fun, of course she must take matters into her own perfectly pedicured paws. As the hilarity ensues, Mabel and her parents learn that through thick and thin, naughty or nice, they’ll always be a family, just as they are.”
While Lane and Elliott tend to keep most of their relationship out of the public eye, in 2018, Lane opened up about Elliott while accepting best performance for an actor in a featured role in a play at the Tony Awards.
As reported by USA Today, Lane said at the end of his speech, “Most importantly … Devlin Elliott, the greatest blessing in my life.”
