Joe Montana won four Super Bowl titles with the San Francisco 49ers — and he also prioritized his wife, Jennifer Montana, through it all.
He has gone down in history as one of the greatest football players, but even when on the sidelines playing with his team, he was thinking of his wife, often calling her from the field.
“I don’t know what made me do it. I’d hung up and I’m sitting there going ‘Hmm, I wonder if these things call out,’ ” he told NFL Films, talking about how he decided to call his wife from the phones used on the sidelines to communicate with coaches and commentators in the stands above. “So I pick up the phone and I hit — what do you normally do, you hit 9 right? Give you an outside line. I hit 9, got a dial tone, (so) I dial my house.”
Once Jennifer answered the phone, it became a tradition. From the field, he would call his wife and tell her he loved and missed her. There were even football cards made with Joe on the phone. He was so committed to calling her from the sidelines that he once said he tried out every phone in every NFL stadium.
Since the 1980s, Joe and Jennifer Montana have had a strong relationship. They met in the 1980s and married shortly after before welcoming four children — two daughters and two sons.
So, who is Joe Montana’s wife? Here’s everything to know about Jennifer Montana and her relationship with the former football star.
Jennifer spent her early career working as a model and actress. She is best known for her role as Miss Lisa in the 1990s children’s show, Adventures with Kanga Roddy. She also worked as a model and acted in commercials, which led to her meeting Joe on set.
Jennifer was on set for a commercial in the 1980s when she met Joe and she didn’t know anything about his football career.
“I didn’t know who he was. It was my agent who told me you’re going to be working with Joe Montana. I said ‘Who’s Joe Montana?’ ” Jennifer recalled in an interview with Yahoo. She had never thought of her costars as potential love interests before, but something about Joe charmed her.
Joe was nervous on set, something that Jennifer gravitated to. She thought she could get him to loosen up a bit with a playful pinch, and it did the trick. The pair finished off the commercial and started a relationship soon after.
While Jennifer may have been smitten with Joe from day one, she did turn down his first proposal. In an interview with Yahoo, Joe recalled that he casually asked Jennifer to marry him six months into their relationship.
When paying for the check at a restaurant, Joe wrote on the paper, “What would you say if I asked you to spend the rest of your life with me?” Although she didn’t agree at the time, Jennifer didn’t give a firm no, so Joe thought he could try again.
For his second proposal, Joe hired a plane to fly over the restaurant they were dining in with the message, “Jen, will you marry me?” He got a yes that time, and the couple have been together for more than 30 years. Jennifer and Joe got married in February 1985.
Joe and Jennifer are the parents of four children: two daughters, Alexandra and Elizabeth, and two sons, Nate and Nick. Their children are all adults now, and being an empty nester made Jennifer even more grateful for her family.
When asked what family means to her as she approached becoming an empty nester, Jennifer told CBS News, “Everything, everything. It’s something we’ve really stressed to the kids growing up.”
No matter how busy Jennifer is, it’s never a question that her children come first. “I think it’s a question of what’s important,” she explained. “You make a list of things you need to do and sometimes it gets squashed … one phone call from the kids.”
Nate and Nick followed in their fathers footsteps and played football in college. Elizabeth works in the operations of an investing firm, and Alexandra attended law school in California.
Jennifer is a successful interior designer in California. Her company works with homeowners and architecture firms to create the spaces of their dreams.
“I believe in making incredible use of space, light, and nature to elevate your home and bring its ambiance to the next level,” she wrote on her website. “Every space deserves to be one-of-a-kind.”
She also creates and sells jewelry.
Joe made history in the 1989 Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals with an impressive 92-yard drive. While that moment has gone down in sports history, he credits his wife for helping him achieve it by packing him a previously worn game jersey.
The last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl was in 1985 against the Miami Dolphins, and Jennifer thought that Joe should wear the same jersey he wore during that game.
He arrived at the 1989 Super Bowl and unpacked his bag to find the jersey. “When I got there, I opened it up and … there was a little note saying something like, ‘Hey, this was good luck for you last time. You might want to wear it again this time,’ ” he told Today.
While if you looked closely, you could tell the jersey was slightly different than the rest of the teams, he credits his wife’s unique idea with helping his team win.
