After the death of their beloved manager, The Future Saints is “in a downward spiral,” performing gigs at dive bars. When record executive Theo is sent to encourage the band to create a hit album, he hatches a plan in which they can all win — featuring the lead singer Hannah’s daring (but popular) new sound. But Hannah’s grief is looming over the band and its future.

Winstead latched onto the idea of a character “rocked by grief” — Hannah, who considered the band’s manager to be the one person she loved most. The author was drawn to the theme on instinct, after her father died of a heart attack while she was drafting the manuscript.

As she herself grappled with grief, Winstead returned to her book with “this new perspective on loss,” able to connect with the characters on a deeper level than before.
“That’s when I understood what The Future Saints needed to be: not a tragedy, but a book about the incredible human instinct to persist, to continue loving other people even though we know how it will end. That as mortals, our lives and loves have an expiration date,” she says.
