Taylor Odlozil did everything he could to honor his wife’s wishes in her final days.
During his recent appearance on the Unplanned podcast with hosts Matt and Abby Howard, the TikToker — whose content went viral when he and wife Haley Odlozil began documenting the final months of her life — opened up about preparing for her final days.
“She had always said, ‘When I go, I want to be in my chair, surrounded by all the people I love. That’s how I want to go,'” he began.
Taylor explained that when the hospice nurse told him the time was coming, he alerted close friends and family, who made their way to the family’s home and surrounded Haley, who was sleeping in her chair.
“She woke up, like right when the prayer ended. She comes to and she’s looking at everybody looking at her and she looks up and she’s like, ‘This is it, isn’t it? This is the end.'”

Taylor explained that Haley began to panic at the realization, to which the hospice nurse advised it would be good to give her anxiety medication to help her be more at ease.
“It calms her down and then a few hours later, I realized I had to go get Weston so I could explain to my son for the last time that mommy is going to heaven, this is it,” Taylor recalled, noting that he picked Weston up from camp and brought him home.
“I bring him in and everyone leaves to give us some privacy,” he elaborated. “I said, ‘You remember how I told you Mommy is going to go to heaven?’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I know Dad.'”
It was important to Taylor to reassure Weston that nothing he did or didn’t do could have changed the moment they were in. The two held Haley’s hand as she was “in a sleep state.”
“I told him, ‘Jesus is coming and I want you know that your mother fought really hard,'” he said. “I wanted him to understand… I want [him] to know that it’s nothing that [he] did wrong, you know, because kids will blame themselves.”
“I got real serious and I said, ‘Look at me, son. You’re an incredible son and the reason that your mother is here right now is because of you and that she’s fought this long because of you, and there’s nothing that you did wrong. You have been a perfect child for us and it’s just going to be me and you soon. I’m going to need you and you’re going to need me.'”
Just 4 years old at the time, Weston “was just nodding his head and grabbing his mom’s hand.”
“She just kind of like came to out of nowhere and looked at Weston and Weston said, ‘I love you, Mommy.’ She said, ‘I love you too, Weston,’ and that was the last thing she ever said. She slipped into a coma state for the next few days.”
Taylor continues to honor Haley’s memory and documents his adventures with Weston. During an appearance on The Get Back podcast earlier this summer, he opened up about their future.
“I’ve just had to accept the change,” he explained. “I mean, I’ll admit since Haley passed, our little family unit doesn’t feel the same. Haley was really the glue that held us all together. Losing her has really been a bomb that’s gone off. Her family, we’re all still close and working on our new path without our precious Haley.”
He concluded, “I’m just so blessed to be in their family and that they still want me to always be a part of the family and they love getting Weston. I think they feel closer to Haley when they have Weston around so I love letting them be around him as much as they want.”
