Emma Grey is turning a new page with her latest book.

The internationally bestselling author will publish a new novel, Start at the End, in 2026, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at its cover.

Written in alternating chapters, Start at the End follows Fraser and Audrey, whose chance encounter at a mutual friend’s party leads to an “epic love story” between the two, per a book description shared with PEOPLE. But after a tragedy, one must learn to live without the other, and find a new kind of love in the process.

Grey, the internationally bestselling author of novels including Pictures of You and The Last Love Note, has published six books over her career. Her latest novel, however, was inspired by her own journey after the death of her husband.

“Ever since tragedy struck my own life nine years ago, I’ve been drawn to the ‘what ifs’ and the idea that one small choice can fling your story onto an unfathomable new path,” Grey tells PEOPLE.

Start at the End pulled me into a world where I could explore this. It showed me that, even if alternative outcomes were possible, it was always going to be about finding our way through inevitable challenges, taking what’s thrown at us and doing our level best to shape our lives against an unpredictable future — no matter where we land.”

Grey says that the process of writing Start at the End was “deliciously thought-provoking, hopeful and romantic” — and it brought forth an important lesson, too.

“[It’s] a reminder that it’s never too late to start again and that, even after great loss, we can scoop up our dreams and carry them down unexpected new avenues,” Grey says. “I can’t wait for readers to have Audrey and Fraser’s story in their hands.”
