A pregnant woman is recovering in the hospital after she was stabbed multiple times by a pizza delivery driver over the size of her tip, according to reports.

The incident happened on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, at the Riviera Motel in Kissimmee, Florida, according to a Facebook release from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, which added that its officers arrived at the location to find “a victim who was stabbed multiple times. The victim was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition.”

Detectives have since arrested Brianna Alvelo, 22, on a warrant for “Home Invasion with a firearm, Attempted Murder, Kidnapping, and Aggravated Assault,” per the release. She is currently being held at the Osceola County Jail.

“It was discovered that the victim had ordered pizza from a local restaurant earlier in the evening, and Alvelo became upset about the tip she had received,” the release added about the events. “Alvelo later returned to the victim’s motel room with an unknown male suspect, who was armed with a firearm, and forced their way into the room.”

“Alvelo, who was armed with a knife, began attacking one of the victims,” the release continued. “The victim was stabbed multiple times, and items were taken from within the room. ”

“The male suspect has not been identified at this time. If you have information regarding this incident, please contact Crimeline at (800) 423-8477,” the release stated.

ABC News identified the victim as a pregnant woman named Melinda Irizarry. The outlet quoted an arrest affidavit as stating that she was stabbed 14 times by Alvelo after she gave her a $2 tip for delivering the pizza.

She suffered a ruptured lung and wounds to her chest, arms, legs and abdomen, ABC News added, citing the affidavit.

Irizarry was staying in the room with her boyfriend and 5-year-old daughter when they ordered the pizza, reported NBC News, citing the affidavit. The outlet added that the pizza cost around $33.

According to the affidavit seen by NBC News, Alvelo and the unknown man returned sometime after she gave them the tip dressed all in black and wearing masks — with the man carrying a pistol.

The pair allegedly forced their way into the motel room and ordered Irizarry’s boyfriend to go into the bathroom.

Alvelo then allegedly pulled out a pocket knife, per NBC News and started going through the group’s belongings.

At this point Irizarry stated that she attempted to shield her daughter and was struck in her lower back, NBC News added, citing the affidavit.

Irizarry then “threw her daughter onto the bed and attempted to pick up her phone,” the affidavit said, reported NBC News.

At this point, she alleged that Alvelo smashed the phone and struck her “multiple times with the knife,” after which the alleged robbers left the motel room.

It was while being treated for her wounds at the hospital that Irizarry discovered she was pregnant, the affidavit said according to NBC News.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE.
