Los Angeles Hit with 3.9-Magnitude Earthquake During Oscars ArticlePure

Los Angeles was hit with a 3.9-magnitude earthquake following the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2. 

The earthquake struck the L.A. area at around 10:13 p.m., reaching 2.1 km (1.3 miles) west-northwest of North Hollywood as well as Universal City and Studio City, among other nearby cities, according to a report from the United States Geological Survey.

The USGS reported that there was weak to light shaking in the areas affected by the earthquake. Some areas — such as San Bernardino — felt no impact at all, according to the survey map. Shaking was also felt in Orange County and Ventura County, ABC 7 Los Angeles reported. 

The Los Angeles Fire Department wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that they were “not entering earthquake mode.”

Local authorities received no immediate calls for medical assistance or damage, according to reports.

The earthquake was felt 10 miles from where the Oscars was held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. 

The 97th Academy Awards was hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien. Anora secured the most awards on the evening, including best picture, best director and best actress for Mikey Madison in her first win.

Among the star-studded guests at the ceremony were best actor winner Adrien Brody, best supporting actress winner Zoe Saldaña and nominees Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Demi Moore, Timothée Chalamet, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce and Selena Gomez.

Following the show, guests and Oscar winners headed to the annual Vanity Fair Oscars party held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

The latest earthquake in L.A. comes after an earthquake in Northern California raised a tsunami warning on Dec. 5, 2024. The warning ended after no destruction was reported in the area following the earthquake. 

The earthquake was reported at a magnitude of 7.0, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center and the United States Geological Survey. A second 5.8-magnitude earthquake also hit Cobb, The Los Angeles Times reported.
