Honeymooners Caught in Hurricane Beryl ‘Doing Well’ (Exclusive) ArticlePure

A couple found themselves in the middle of Hurricane Beryl while on their honeymoon in Grenada. After staying safe inside their hotel room as the storm battered the island, the honeymooners say they’re “doing well,” and are keeping those still in the path of the deadly storm in their thoughts.

When Alex and Emma Steinke, both 26, planned their honeymoon in April, they had no idea what was in store for them. Instead, after tying the knot on Saturday, June 15, the couple found themselves in Grenada when the hurricane made landfall in the Caribbean as a Category 4 storm.

In an update on Wednesday, July 3, Emma tells PEOPLE that they didn’t end up getting hit very hard by the storm. In fact, the hotel has already cleaned up most of the debris and says “things are operating as normal.”

But not everyone has been so fortunate, and the storm has already claimed the lives of 7 people, per CNN.

“Some of the workers here at Sandals have expressed that their families aren’t doing very well when we’ve asked them,” she says.

As of July 3, the storm is currently heading towards Jamaica and all three of their international airports are closed, according to NPR.

In an advisory by the National Hurricane Center at 2 p.m. EST, officials said Beryl has max sustained winds of 140 mph and that hurricane conditions are expected to spread into Jamaica as the eye approaches.

Speaking at a news briefing that afternoon, Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned that the island has “not seen the worst” of the storm, per CNN.

Emma previously told PEOPLE that when the couple first started their travels to Granada, it was still a tropical storm. But by the time they landed around 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, a hurricane watch was on.

“It was a bit surreal” and a “lot to process,” she said.

For now, the couple, who are currently scheduled to fly out of Grenada on Saturday, July 6, are hoping that everybody in the path of the storm is okay.

She adds, “We’re mostly just hoping everyone remains safe.”
