Gena Rowlands’ Son Nick Cassavetes Posts Tribute to Mom After Her Death ArticlePure

Gena Rowlands’ son Nick Cassavetes is sharing sweet memories of his mother after her death.

Rowlands, most known for her roles in The Notebook and A Woman Under the Influence, died at her Indian Wells, Calif. home at 94 years old on Wednesday, Aug. 14. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including her husband Robert and daughter Alexandra.

On Thursday, Cassavetes paid tribute to the late actress in a sentimental Instagram post. Sharing a throwback image of the mother and son smiling together, he wrote, “One last hurrah. Love you, Mom. See you soon…”

Cassavetes, 65, also reposted several memories and messages that others shared about Rowlands via his Instagram Stories. One photo featured Rowlands’ iconic poster for the 1980 film Gloria, in which she played the titular character.

In another image, Rowlands smiled as she held hands with her husband John Cassavetes — Nick’s father — for their movie Opening Night, which was released in 1977.

“Another great team reunited! RIP Gena Rowlands,” the post read. John and Rowlands wed in 1954 and shared Nick and daughters Alexandra and Zoe before he died in 1989 from complications of cirrhosis. He was 59.

Rowlands married retired businessman Robert Forrest in 2012, whom Cassavetes affectionately calls Bob.

She and Nick worked together on The Notebook in 2004, which he directed. Rowlands starred as an older Allie who had Alzheimer’s. It became one of her most well-known roles.

Her death comes two months after Nick shared that Rowlands had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

He told Entertainment Weekly, “I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s.”

He continued at the time, “She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy — we lived it, she acted it, and now it’s on us.”

He added that The Notebook was still a beloved movie 20 years after its release.

“It’s always a shock to hear that as much time has gone by as it has, but it makes sense. I’m just happy that it exists. It seems to have worked,” he said. “I’m very proud of it.”
