Warning: this story contains spoilers for The White Lotus.
The White Lotus isn’t a horror series, but you may still be screaming through the whole thing thanks to the healthy helping of uncomfortable moments that have become its signature.
Dating back to season 1, The White Lotus made a name for itself as one of those shows that you can’t miss an episode of — but I spend much of my viewing experience watching behind my fingers. Whether it’s because of tension you can cut with a knife, a glimpse of unexpected nudity or a kiss between brothers (yes)— this show is one of the most addictive yet toughest watches on TV.
As I continue to reel from that kiss from season 3 episode 5, I decided: What better way to recover than to think of all the other times I’ve had to curl into a ball out of secondhand embarrassment as the events unravel in front of me.
Read on to this PEOPLE writer’s ranking of the most shocking — and sheer cringe — moments from the HBO series, from awkward to awful.
Back in season 2, Daphne Sullivan and her husband Cameron’s out-of-touch lifestyle was on full display when during a sitdown with Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan Spiller (Will Sharpe) — the other couple they’re vacationing with — where Daphne, played by Meghann Fahy, laughs at Harper’s anxiety about the state of things.
“Harper! The world’s not ending, it’s not that bad,” she says. “Honestly, Cam and I don’t even watch the news anymore”
“I’m just so over the news cycle, you know? It’s like, give me a break,” her husband, played by Theo James, chimes in.

And in keeping with the theme of current events, Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) and and Laurie (Carrie Coon) lived out the grueling — and uncomfortable — realization that one of their oldest friends might not share their political values.
When they question if their friend Kate (Leslie Bibb) feels “weird” going to church regularly in Texas with “Bible thumpers,” Kate seems puzzled by the question. Laurie then goes on to ask if talking politics is ever “awkward” — once again, Kate acts confused.
At last, when Laurie asks her straight up whether she voted for Donald Trump, Kate smiles and changes the subject. “Are we really going to talk about Trump tonight? It is a very pretty church. It’s not weird at all.”
It was instantly the stuff memes were made of.

As audiences watched while Jason Isaacs character Timothy Ratliff’s world began to unravel, his kids also got an unfortunate view of their lorazepam-addled dad’s crotch when his robe falls open. As his two younger kids, played by Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook shuddered at the sight, I did exactly the same from my couch.

Ah, 2021. It’s been a while since I thought about season 1 of the show that aired nearly four years ago but when I do, it’s hard to forget this moment between Connie Britton and Alexandra Daddario. An earnest Daddario, who plays out-of-her-element newlywed Rachel, approaches Britton’s character, tech mogul Nicole, looking for advice as a fan — then mentions that she had written a story on Nicole through her work as a freelance journalist. Immediately the air grows 50 degrees colder.
“That was a f—– up piece,” Nicole responds to a stunned Rachel. “Yeah, I remember that. That was a hatchet job.”
She continues on, slamming the article as “bad journalism.” Rachel, as anyone would, walks away with her tail between her legs and even my own heart rate took a few moments to come down.
Season 2 episode 5 ended with a doozy of a reveal when Jennifer Coolidge’s character Tanya (RIP) walks in on Jack (Leo Woodall) having sex with Quentin (Tom Hollander) — ahem, the man we were told was his uncle! And even worse — these gays, they’re trying to murder her!

And going back to season 1 once more, how could we ignore one of the most shocking — and disgusting — scenes to date where, after an extended argument between Armond, the hotel manager played by Murray Barlett and guest Shane (Jake Lacy), Armond tries to get the last “word” by defecating into Shane’s suitcase. The moment turns from gross to gruesome when Shane returns to the room to find his soiled belongings and ends up stabbing Armond where he’s been hiding in the bathroom.

My hand was over my mouth for much of this episode as we watched the strange tension between brothers Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and his little brotherLochlan (Sam Nivola) culminate in a makeout session.
After being goaded into a silly peck on the lips by fellow hotel guests Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon), Lochlan went in for a much more passionate kiss — and I screamed out loud.
My stomach is already in knots thinking of how this will be addressed next episode.
