Cate Blanchett Named Ambassador for Nature Reserve on Earth Day

Actress Cate Blanchett has been appointed as an ambassador for a nature reserve located in West Sussex. The announcement was made by Kew’s botanic gardens at Wakehurst, near Haywards Heath, to coincide with Earth Day.

Wakehurst is renowned for housing Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank, which is recognized as the world’s largest repository of seeds from wild plant species.

In a statement released via Wakehurst, Blanchett expressed her delight at being appointed as the reserve’s inaugural ambassador. As a regular visitor to the gardens, she emphasized her admiration for the conservation efforts undertaken there, describing them as essential measures to safeguard against the extinction of various flora and fauna species.

Blanchett highlighted the beauty of Wakehurst, emphasizing its diverse landscapes encompassing formal gardens, wild meadows, woodlands, and wetlands across its expansive 535-acre area.

Speaking on her new role, Blanchett expressed her intention to raise awareness about Wakehurst’s unique landscape and its positive impact on all lives.

Earth Day, a global event promoting environmental protection, served as an apt occasion for the announcement. Previously, Wakehurst adorned the UK’s tallest living Christmas tree with energy-saving lightbulbs during the festive season.

Richard Deverell, Director of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, lauded Blanchett’s appointment, noting her longstanding advocacy for social and environmental causes. He acknowledged her special connection to Wakehurst and the Millennium Seed Bank, recognizing her as a valuable ally in advancing conservation efforts.
