‘A Minecraft Movie’ Earns a Whopping $80 Million in Second Weekend ArticlePure

A Minecraft Movie is shattering the box office.

According to Variety, the adventure-action film earned a whopping $80 million at the box office in its second weekend of release.

The movie earned $20.5 million on April 11, $34.4 million on April 12 and $25.7 million on April 13, per Box Office Mojo,

The film, which stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black and Jennifer Coolidge, has also remained at number one since its release on April 4.

Variety reports that despite A Minecraft Movie’s 50% decline since its recording-breaking $162.7 million debut, its second-weekend box office hit is still impressive for a movie of its size.

The film is now the highest grossing of the year, with a domestic gross of $281 million and a global gross of $550 million so far. It went ahead of Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World ($199 million domestic, $410 million globally), per the outlet.

PEOPLE previously reported that the blockbuster earned $157 million domestically during its opening weekend, as well as $301 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. It broke the box-office record for the largest opening weekend ever for a video-game movie adaptation, beating 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A Minecraft Movie follows four misfits into a cubic wonderland (Overworld) after they are pulled in by a mysterious portal.

To get home, they then have to “master the terrain while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected crafter named Steve (Jack Black),” according to the movie’s official synopsis.

Earlier this month, cinemas warned moviegoers against “disruptive behaviour” after a social media trend featured many viewers vocally reacting to a particular scene.

Clips shared to TikTok and other social media sites showed audiences around the world reciting, screaming and throwing popcorn when Jack Black’s character says the phrase “chicken jockey”

The scene features Black’s Steve and Momoa’s character Garett Garrison in a boxing ring, where a baby zombie can be seen riding a chicken — a rare occurrence in the Minecraft game that had already become a meme ahead of the film’s release.

“To ensure everyone has the best possible cinema experience, we’re increasing our monitoring of screens during performances,” a spokesperson for REEL Cinema in Fareham, England, told Daily Echo, per The Independent.

“Disruptive behavior, including taking part in TikTok trends, before, during, or after a screening will not be tolerated,” the statement continued. “Anyone causing disruption will be asked to leave, and where necessary, the police will be called.”
