A helicopter crash at an Alabama military base has resulted in one person’s death and another being injured, during what was described as a “routine flight training.”
On Wednesday, Aug. 7, around 1:40 p.m. local time, military officials at the Ford Novosel base “were notified of a mishap of an AH-64 Apache helicopter conducting routine flight training on Fort Novosel,” according to a release shared with PEOPLE from the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel.
Inside the two-member aircraft were a pilot instructor, who was killed, and a U.S. Army student pilot, who “was airlifted via Army MEDEVAC helicopter for further medical evaluation, the release said.

John Cawley, the Dale County Coroner, identified the deceased instructor pilot as Daniel Munger, 46, who was a contractor and retired from the Army, according to The Associated Press.
The identification of the injured student pilot has not yet been released.
“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general, said in the release following the deadly crash.
Currently, there are no additional details regarding what caused the helicopter crash – but military officials said “the mishap is under investigation.”
